coolhandduke- not to downplay it being dangerous over there and I\'m sorry to hear about your loss, but it\'s not like Mexico changed over night or since YOU first wrote this post; its been like this for the last few years. Its a big time shame whats happening over there, that is downplayed/ignored by the media. The Marriott I stayed at if tourism was still booming should have been at least $120 dollars or more. But since you already have to cross the border to visit Dr. C I don\'t see much extra harm in staying at the Marriott or the Grand close by, especially a single male that\'s gonna be keeping low key recovering anyways, just like traveling to any foreign country you just gotta play it safe. Then again San Diego is one of my new favorite city\'s and is much more enjoyable then being stuck in a hotel room in Tijuana anyways.

Dr. Casavantes and Wade said the crime rate had improved drastically as of recent. Having said that, I\'m staying in my room and leaving this evening with the shuttle driver. Thanks for caring enough to share. It is much appreciated.

\"Improved\" because the crime rate went up or down?

i admire Luis Casavantes and his staff, but he lives states side, i\'ve partied till the weee morning hours in Tj at the clubs, i know Dr.C doesn\'t party like Coolhand, he\'s more centered like my pops, but its up to you, if you don\'t have any commitments in Tj why stay over night? just stay in San Diego, ask yourself where does Doc C and Wade sleep at night, surely not in Tj. If you think saving $20 bucks is worth it, GO RIGHT AHEAD, surely this isn\'t an advisement forum. But remember, you hear or feel the bullets b4 the lights and sirens arrive, true Tj is just as safe as Oakland Ca, but I\'d hate to see a fellow American get hurt, or any of my Aussie friends. Cheers

In hotel room (locked) with curtains drawn. I will only come out to get into the shuttle. The Grand Hotel Tijuana has been amazing though. I\'m not one to take a tour of TJ by auto or foot. Hell, my Spanish isn\'t the best in the world anyway. I was massaging earlier and had forgot to put the \"Do not disturb sign\" on the door handle. Room service entered as I scrambled shouting, \"NO MOLESTAR! NO MOLESTAR!\" True story and funny as shit. Man... that would have been a sight for the cleaning lady.

And CHL... I have ordered 4 meals total. All were excellent. I ordered the American breakfast and you are correct... the bacon was outrageous.

@wannabhung45 & the forum crew
Maybe I was over zealous in my estimate of Tijuana, maybe i wasn\'t? Its so difficult to polarize a city that has a reputation of being the good, the bad, and the ugly. I do not know what your allowance is for this trip, but if you were going to stay anywhere in Tijuana, i would recommend staying as close to the Boarder as you can, the closest Hotel with a 4-Star reputation is Pueblo Amigo, i booked online on a previous adventure & i booked it at the AAA discounted rate, total cost with taxes was $64 USD. This place is ranked a 4-Star hotel but since the toilet plumbing is unreliable from room to room i\'d rank it a 3.5-Star Hotel. Its literally 2-3minutes from the boarder, Hotel Ticuan is a nicer Hotel in my strong opinion, but its about 10-15minutes from the boarder, and its near a very popular night club that can attract trouble, thats an empty statement, but it is what it is. Ticuan is about $53-54 USD a night, a 4-Star hotel, it doesn\'t have out-dated rooms like the Grand Hotel or the Marriot.
But if you\'ve never stayed in Tj or its your first time ever in Tj, I would stick to my gut and stay in San Diego, Holiday Inn Express San Diego Otay Mesa is $98 +tax per night, SanDiego-Downtown off 1617 first ave, close to the SD airport, is $99 +tax, these prices are close to what others have spent to stay in Tj (ie- Grand Hotel, Marriot), but at least you are in the USA. I\'ve quoted you some deals using the AAA discount, all you have to do is make a choice and make an online reservation, if you stay at Pueblo Amigo, you can grab some inexpensive Real viagra and Cialis at ley market next door to the hotel. No more on this subject lol!
Cheers

Sorry this is an old thread - but I was just curious if anyone\'s opinions changed. Miracle, I was going to stay in the Grand also, as that is what Wade recommended since it is in the same complex. I noticed there\'s a Carl\'s Jr outside of it & I am a total sucker for Carl\'s Jr (we don\'t have them where I live) - but is it truly that unsafe to EVER leave on foot? It\'s pretty obvious I am an American white boy. Did you just order room service the whole time? Is the water ok or did you get bottles?

I think I\'ll stay 3 nights - one to settle in the night before...one Weds, checkup on thurs, and then Friday I\'ll leave if all is well. They aren\'t going to be around on the weekend anyway, so there\'s no real point to stay until Monday. I guess I could cut it do 2 nights if I went straight to the clinic on Weds...but I definitely want to stay till Friday as a first timer. The hotel is pretty cheap anyway.

How were the beds and the noise? Those are the only 2 things that get me.

Tijuana is a very clean and modern city. It\'s not what you would think of when you think border town. You have nothing to worry about walking around IMO. I stayed at the Marriott which was new and nice. Very friendly there and very comfortable. The Grand Hotel is an older building and an older hotel. So it has a old dark feel. As for the actual rooms I\'m not entirely sure, but I\'ve heard they are dark and old feeling as well. Either way you will have a comfortable stay though. Again, nothing to worry about. Its crossing back to the states that gets frustrating.

Thanks Mike - Yeah I read on TripAdvisor that the Marriott was nicer too. So, it\'s easy to walk from one to the other even when you\'re swollen and stuff? Did you take a cab? I\'ve heard all kinds of crazy things - like not to take a cab. I saw in your progress that you stayed in SD after that - was that just to let things settle down before flying home & to stay close to the clinic if any problems came up? Wade was saying you can leave basically the next day or the day after. I\'m a little cautious about all this too (i\'ve been through a lot) so I might do what you did.

THIS IS NOT AN OLD THREAD just a thread with limited participation. When I visit baja i\'m all about a comfortable clean room, sometimes I spoil myself in very nice hotel or resort. But the Marriott is over priced for what you get, the food needs to be improved and there are better options in baja gents.

my recent updated favorites:

Hotel Velario
www.facebook.com/VelarioHotel?ref=profile
Pros: Holiday Inn styled hotel, $30-50/day, clean, helpful staff
Calle 1ra, Art 123 No 7920, 22000 Tijuana, Baja California(USA) 011526646384839 o 6883411

Real Del Mar Golf Resort

a compromise between these 2 suggestions is Pueblo Amigo Hotel & , avg 60-70USD

Bueno Suerte

Thanks CHL - I once posted a reply to a topic on a forum from 2011 or something and then the mod was like \"This is 2 years old - do not necropost [wtf] you have been warned\". So, anyway...

Some of those seemed far from Avanti Derma. I\'m not sure how much discomfort there is - but I definitely couldn\'t walk too far after the surgery I just had. Are cabs and food safe/ok around all of those?
