I was doing some research and found some interesting stuff. I've been looking for a way to soften hard feeling areas of
PMMA. I don't have a
PMMA but want it. Anyways, histologically I do not know exactly what hardened areas of
PMMA are. They could be collections of
PMMA beads bonded by collagen. They could be scar tissue. Similarity in breast implants patients there are sometimes complaints of hardening around the implant which is called a 'capsular contracture.' It is supposedly a hardened scar tissue, which after all is collagen, just a more rigid form. Patients with this hardened tissue around breast implants were able to significantly reduce the hardness of the tissue after a several month course of Zafirlukast which is a drug usually prescribed for asthma patients. Supposedly this drug interferes with the immune systems response and prevents it from creating hardened tissue. I don't have the article on hand but if you look up 'capsular contracture zafirlukast' it should pop up on google.
