Pmma + Caffeine

I'm really confused about the topic of caffeine and PMMA. Many people here say that it would harm the results shortly before and shortly after pmma session because of the vasoconstrictor. That makes a bit of sense.

Others swear by caffeine because it supposedly boosts metabolism and stimulates collagen. Therefore, they make even a special collagen coffee (with collagen powder). Also true. Coffee its a well know beauty advice in general when it comes to collagen in general. (Women do it regards anti aging)

My own opinion:

- the week before the session I drink normal coffee. Two cups a day.

- I stop drinking coffee for 10-14 days after surgery—but only to be absolutely sure and to especially avoid the turtle effect. I actually think that's even a bit overthinking. I do it just to be sure. Also two days before session ..

- After 2 weeks I drink coffee normal! I do not think the vasoconstriction effect is that crazy. (Effect on the blood-vessels.) And with regard to the (maybe) turtle effect: Anyway: I'll be wearing the stretcher consistently for 8 weeks anyway. (?)

Here we seem to have one opinion from a doctor about that topic:

Long story short:
- Trurtle Effect Coffee: Yes maybe its true. First 2 weeks I dont drink while the product is settling. ! After that time its fine. +Especially when you wear the stretcher absolutely consequent for so many weeks.

- Vasoconstriction (effect on blood-vessels): Also true. I mean you should also not smoke. But I do not think it can be compared to smoking… After 2 Weeks coffee is absolutely fine ??

- Collagen/Coffee: Its seems that Coffee has a good effect on collagen in general beauty scene.

What is your advice @Skeptical_One ?
I m really confused. Also when you just tip in google „caffeine and pmma“ you find hundreds of studies !?

Caffeine stops collagen synthesis

pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4206198...20skin%20fibroblasts .

Caffeine reduces collagen synthesis in human cultured skin fibroblasts. HA did not have any significant protective effect on this process. This is the first study to our knowledge that reports caffeine-induced inhibition of collagen synthesis in human skin fibroblasts.

Yes yes this study I also saw.. but when you search on this forum for „caffeine“ you can find 3-4 comments from PMMA-docs that this has no effect / not a significant effect.

Furthermore: There are also a lot of studies that the „amount is the venom“ and that till four cups / coffee a day, coffee is a supportive effect on skin. The reason also why its in many beauty products or you can buy collagen-coffee powder.

Long story short: In case you drink 2 cups of coffee a day .. there is no problem at all. At Avanti they re even offering you coffee before the procedure..

I'm glad you clarified what was otherwise an oversimplified (and misleading) claim: "Caffeine stops collagen synthesis." Could caffeine correlate with gains in some cases? Possibly. But as member PmmaFan pointed out, the average person drinking one or two cups of joe daily is unlikely to see any day-to-day effects.

The study in the link provided was conducted on fibroblasts in a petri-dish and exposed to caffeine concentrations far exceeding what’s typically seen in our blood samples after normal consumption. It doesn’t account for how caffeine is metabolized or how it actually behaves within a human being, let alone its interaction with PMMA microspheres, which promotes neocollagenesis through entirely different mechanisms.

At best, this is an interesting read for those studying the subject. At worst, it's being misinterpreted out of context. If caffeine were truly a collagen killer at everyday doses, we’d be seeing far more obvious side effects, and not just in aesthetics. If anything, we should be more concerned about caffeine’s stimulant effects on the cardiovascular system long before speculating about its impact on filler gains.
